Christopher Allery is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. Allery uses photography to capture the atmosphere associated with sites of personal significance. Connection with individuals who populate these spaces has provided Allery with rich opportunities for improvisation and conversation when creating portraiture.
Making images which communicate a range of ambiguities has allowed Allery to contemplate among other themes: queer identity, religion, and spirituality.
Influenced by his experiences in South East Queensland, a place where street lights are sparse and there is minimal light pollution. It is in these ‘imagined spaces’ on the edge of suburban, small town life that the conceptual geography for Allery’s practice was initially formed and continues to develop. A terrain which layers fact with fiction. Where fears and desires bleed into, ’otherness’.
Allery has a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film Production) from the Queensland University of Technology. He was Highly Commended for the Percival Photographic Portraiture Prize 2022, and was a finalist in the Clip Award for Photographic Contemporary Landscape 2024.
